Miss Universe Harnaz Sandhu gave a blunt answer to the critics
Miss Universe 2021 Hernandez Sandhu reacted to her online trolling about weight gain, saying she had been diagnosed with celiac disease, a condition caused by gluten sensitivity. The disease is a reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.
22-year-old Harnaz Sandhu has crowned Miss Universe at the 70th edition of the global pageant in Eilat, Israel in December last year. She has previously been crowned Miss Diva 2021, Femina Miss India Punjab 2019 and she also made it to the Top 12 at Femina Miss India 2019.
Speaking to PTI, Sandhu revealed, “I’m one of those individuals who was first bullied that ‘she’s too skinny and now they bully me saying ‘she’s fat’. Nobody knows about my celiac disease. That I can’t eat wheat flour and many other things.”

Netizens have been trolling her for her weight gain and Harnaaz revealed that she suffers from celiac disease, which is an immune reaction to eating gluten (a protein found in wheat). What is celiac disease?
Celiac disease is an outcome of over ingestion of gluten that causes damage to the intestine, and globally, affects 1 in 100 people. The condition occurs when eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine, which over time leads to damage to the linings and prevents it from absorbing some nutrients.
According to Mayo Clinic, intestinal damage often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. In children, malabsorption can affect growth and development, besides causing the symptoms seen in adults. Health experts have also pointed out that the condition is hereditary and people with a first-degree relative with celiac disease (parent, child, sibling) have a 1 in 10 chance of developing the condition. According to Celiac Disease Foundation, it can develop at any age after people start eating foods or medicines that contain gluten. Left untreated, celiac disease can lead to additional serious health problems.
